Professional Development

THE INDIANA WRITING PROJECT offers several professional development opportunities each year, some available to all area teachers and some designed for and implemented with teachers in specific school districts. Check out opportunities below for improving the teaching of writing in your classroom or school.

Opportunities For Teachers and Administrators

Invitational Summer Institute

In the summer of 2024, the Indiana Writing Project will be offering a Invitational Summer Institute on the teaching of writing at all levels and in all disciplines. Join with other teachers this summer to develop your own skills as a teacher-writer while exploring pedagogies, policies, and research about writing instruction.

Journal Writing Mini-Institute

This mini-institute is running at full capacity throughout the 2024-25 academic year. It consists of a series of in-person and virtual workshops designed to help teachers reflect, recharge, and restore. Participants make journals and learn to use them effectively in the classroom. If you are interested in implementing a journal workshop or mini-institute in your own school, contact IWP to talk through the possibilities.

Inservice Workshops and Training

Teachers who have completed the IWP Invitational Summer Institute and additional preparation are available to provide Inservice Workshops, for schools or school districts. Contact IWP and describe your needs, and we will try to match you with a Teacher Consultant who will fit your request. Possibilities for topics include study groups, portfolios, authentic assessment, writing across the curriculum, process writing, reading/writing workshops, and the writing portion of ILEARN.

IWP Teaching Consultants can also contact IWP if they are interested in offering programming in area schools.

Advanced Institute

June 25-27, 2024

This Advanced Institute will explore the science of reading through the lens of a Writing Project Teacher Consultant. Facilitator Jenny Smithson will lead TCs through the book Artfully Teaching the Science of Reading by Chase Young, David Paige, and Timothy V. Rasinski. This text provides a research-backed approach to bridging the science of reading with artful and creative methods of teaching literacy. Although the book is aimed at elementary teachers, it is applicable to teachers at all grade levels.
