Professional Development

The Indiana Writing Project offers professional development opportunities for both teachers and administrators, as well as for teacher consultants. View our opportunities below.

Open Institute: Writing Works
TBA

Open Institute is a five-day, collaborative exploration of how writing workshop works in classrooms facilitated by Teacher-Consultants of the Indiana Writing Project. The Open Institute is open to and appropriate for all teachers. Past participants have ranged from kindergarten teachers to high school French instructors.

This workshop will provide an opportunity for teachers in grades K—12 to work collaboratively to explore how the Writing workshop works in classrooms—what it looks like and how to put it into practice. This workshop is for you if you have a desire to reflect on your own practice as a teacher of writing and investigate ways to enhance what you are currently doing in the classroom. During the week you will enter a community of writers, share with other teachers from various backgrounds, experience the writing workshop, delve into the professional literature, and work with others to plan your own writing workshop for the fall.

Benefits

At the end of the week you will have...

  • A philosophy of writing

  • Goals for the upcoming school year

  • An understanding of Writing Workshop and how it fits under the standards

  • A copy of Writing Workshop: The Essential Guide by Ralph Fletcher & JoAnn Portalupi
